At Waterside Academy, personalisation means choosing the strongest route to a successful next step; it does not mean lowering expectations.

Pupils arrive with different starting points, prior learning, levels of engagement and individual needs. Curriculum pathways are therefore planned carefully so that pupils can access an ambitious and meaningful curriculum while working towards qualifications and destinations that are appropriate to them. Decisions take account of prior learning, attendance and engagement, identified needs, qualification feasibility and the pupil’s intended destination.

GCSE-Focused Pathway

For pupils able to sustain the knowledge, attendance and assessment demands of GCSE study, the curriculum provides ambitious preparation in the core and appropriate additional subjects.

Targeted intervention is used to address specific gaps while maintaining access to the wider curriculum.

Blended GCSE and Functional Skills Pathway

For some pupils, a planned combination of GCSEs, Functional Skills and other recognised outcomes provides the strongest route.

This pathway allows qualification choices to reflect pupils’ starting points and educational history without unnecessarily reducing curriculum breadth or ambition.

Re-engagement and Personalised Pathway

Some pupils require a more gradual return to sustained education or additional specialist input.

Core learning remains central, supported by targeted intervention, practical learning, carefully selected off-site provision and staged increases in participation. The aim is to rebuild engagement while keeping pupils connected to meaningful learning and future progression.

Destination-Led Pathway

As pupils approach transition, curriculum planning becomes increasingly focused on their intended next step.

Qualification completion is combined with career planning, applications, practical independence, employer and college engagement and transition work so that pupils are well-prepared for education, training or employment beyond Waterside.

Keeping Ambition High

Whatever pathway a pupil follows, the principle remains the same: personalisation should improve access, participation and the likelihood of a successful next step.

Where a different route is needed, leaders ensure that it remains purposeful, sufficiently broad and clearly connected to the next stage of education, training or employment.
