11. Subjects
At Waterside Academy, each subject is planned as part of a coherent curriculum that builds from pupils’ starting points towards clearly defined end points.
Subject teachers identify the key knowledge, prior knowledge, vocabulary and concepts pupils need to secure, and plan how these should be sequenced, revisited and applied over time. Where pupils have gaps in prior learning, teachers provide the support needed to help them reconnect with the planned curriculum without unnecessarily lowering ambition.
Our subject curriculum pages set out:
- what pupils learn in each subject;
- how knowledge is sequenced across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4;
- the important knowledge and vocabulary pupils are expected to remember;
- how learning builds towards qualifications and future study where appropriate;
- and how each subject contributes to pupils’ wider development and preparation for life beyond Waterside.
The precise curriculum in each subject is reviewed over time in response to pupils’ needs, curriculum evaluation and the demands of future learning. This ensures that the curriculum remains broad, ambitious, coherent and purposeful.
