Grim Tales Writing Competition: A Showcase of Student Creativity

Waterside Academy’s Grim Tales Writing Competition: A Showcase of Student Creativity

We’re proud to share that Waterside Academy recently ran the Grim Tales writing competition, and there were some truly amazing entries! Our students showcased their flair for storytelling, drawing inspiration from fairy tales, folklore, myths, and legends to create original mini sagas—each told in just 100 words.

Starting with familiar tales gave students the confidence to explore new ideas:
– What does a modern fairy tale look like?
– Could the villain tell their side of the story?
– What really happens after “happily ever after”?

Using Inspiration Postcards, videos, and free classroom resources, our students found creative ways to make their stories unique. The competition was open to all ages and abilities, making it an inclusive and exciting project across the school.

Every participant had the chance to see their work published in a special book—an achievement that truly boosts confidence and pride. Plus, there were incredible prizes up for grabs:

  • The top story winner received an iPad mini and a trophy.

  • Four runners-up each won £50 and a trophy.

  • And Waterside Academy had the chance to win £1,000 as Best School!

We’re thrilled with how engaged and enthusiastic our students were. It’s clear their storytelling journeys are just beginning.

Will all their stories end happily ever after? At Waterside Academy, that’s always up to them.
