3. "I CAN" Values at the Heart of the Curriculum

Our I CAN values shape both what we teach and how we teach it.

Inclusion

Every pupil has access to a meaningful and ambitious curriculum.

We adapt pathways, teaching and support around pupils’ starting points and barriers, while keeping important curriculum end points in view.

Communication

Language, reading, oracy and relationships enable pupils to access learning and participate in school life.

Communication is developed across subjects through explicit vocabulary, reading, discussion, reciprocal approaches and purposeful feedback.

Aspiration

The curriculum should open doors rather than confirm previous limitations.

Pupils work towards recognised outcomes, encounter careers and further education, experience challenge and are supported to see a credible future beyond Waterside.

Nurture

Pupils learn best when classrooms are safe, predictable and relational.

Consistent routines, fresh starts, positive relationships and well-judged support create the security pupils need to take risks, persevere and become more independent.
